Wiley Post Spirit Award Created
|
Oklahoma City--Oct 27, '04
A recent press release announced that the Wiley Post Commission has been created
by a local group of Oklahoma City pilots and historians to promote the legacy of Wiley Post.
"The purpose of the commission is to establish an annual award which gives national
and international recognition to an individual in General Aviation, who best exemplifies the
engineering and innovative pioneering spirit of Wiley Post. In particular, to someone who
hasn't the financial support of either the government, or of a large corporate backer."
Executive Director Bob Kemper said.
"Too often achievements in General Aviation or Sport Aviation are not recognized
because they are an individual's effort and these pilots and builders don't have the media
apparatus to make their endeavors know," Kemper added
The Commission's selection committee consists of long time aviation professionals,
amateur aircraft builders, pilots and a former astronaut. The recipient of the 2004 "Wiley
Post Spirit Award: will be announced later this month (Dec). An awards banquet will be
held for the winner at Wiley Post Airport in Oklahoma City, date to be announced.
"We are very excited about the prospects for this award. One of our commission
members was instrumental in the creation of the "Jim Thorpe Award" , one of the most
prestigious awards in collegiate football. We will build the "Wiley Post Spirit Award" into an
equally prestigious award, Kemper said.
For submission of nominees please e-mail the Wiley Post Commission.
